Spa Etiquette
Your first visit to a spa is exciting, but can also cause a little bit of apprehension if you’re not sure what to expect. Each day spa strives to create a tranquil and relaxing environment for their clients, and there are certain expectations placed on the visitors as well as the spa staff. To make your first, and subsequent, visits a comfortable and relaxing experience, follow these simple guidelines:
1. Book well in advance, and have the courtesy to call at least 48 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
2. Ask the spa staff for detailed information on the type of service to be provided. This will give you a much better understanding and idea of what to expect.
3. Discuss specifics about the technician/therapist that is assigned to you. Do you prefer a male or female therapist? Some guests do not have a preference, but be sure to check and request a specific gender if it makes a difference to you.
4. Determine the tipping policy in advance and be prepared accordingly. In day spas, 15-20% is typical.
5. Wear suitable, comfortable clothes and be prepared to undress to the level required for the spa treatment. The therapist will step out of the room while you undress and get situated on the table underneath the draping. Massage therapists are professionally trained in proper draping techniques, which will ensure your comfort and privacy throughout the process so you can simply relax.
6. Arrive at least 10 minutes ahead of your appointment time so that you will have time to relax and take in the tranquil surrounding environment.
7. Let the spa staff know if you have any type of current or chronic health conditions that may need to be addressed or discussed before your treatment.
8. Make sure you turn off any electronic devices – including cell phones! This is for the comfort of other guests as well as your own comfort, because the idea of going to a spa is to “get away from it all” and relax! You can’t relax if you’re answering calls, checking emails and texting.
9. Everyone has different preferences when enjoying a spa treatment. Some guests like to speak to the therapist, while others do not. The therapist will follow your lead.
10. Be sure to inform the therapist if the treatment is uncomfortable in any way. They understand that everyone is different, and that you may require less or more pressure when enjoying a massage.
11. Enjoy your treatment, take some deep cleansing breaths and relax to get the full benefits of your spa session.
12. Take your time while leaving the room, but keep in mind that another client may be waiting to use that space.
13. Before leaving the spa, be sure to let the spa personnel know if your experience was as expected. Feedback is always appreciated and helps the spa to improve their service offerings.
14. Also ask about any products that might help to create a spa experience at home. Candles, essential oils, and other skin care products will help make the spa feeling last longer.
